Former softball coach arrested on sex charges

CARO Mickey Gotwalt, 51, was formally charged with 12 counts of criminal sexual conduct in Tuscola County today.

A magistrate charged Gotwalt with four counts of first degree CSC and eight counts of second degree CSC. The most serious charge could land him in prison for the rest of his life.

The criminal complaint alleges Gotwalt, who was the varsity softball coach at Caro High School, had sex and other sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. The alleged incidents happened last July and August.

A statement on the school's website says the girl's parents contacted the district last fall, and the investigation was turned over to police. That same statement says the alleged sexual contact happened on school grounds and that Gotwalt resigned.

Prosecutor Mark Reene says investigators have uncovered numerous text messages and have phone records showing Gotwalt and the girl were in contact. Reene says charges were issued against Gotwalt earlier this week after new information came to light. He will not elaborate on what that information was.

Gotwalt was arrested Wednesday at the White Pine Behavior Health center in Saginaw Township by the Michigan State Police.

In court today, it was revealed that Gotwalt allegedly had plans to leave with the teenager.

Is also reportedly left a suicide note and didn't plan to be taken into custody alive.
