March 8, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Surgeons at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center have performed the first hand transplant in the western U.S.

The 14-hour operation, which took place over the weekend, gave a 26-year-old mother a new right hand.

She lost the hand in a traffic accident five years ago. The patient was still at the hospital recovering as of Tuesday.

A 17-member team was involved in the delicate operation.

UCLA is the fourth facility in the nation to offer this procedure and the first west of the Rocky Mountains.
