Drivers with intermediate licenses, which includes most 16 year olds and some 17 year olds, will not be allowed to have more than one passenger under the age of 21 unless they're accompanied by a parent or guardian, or driving to and from school events.
The other new rule in Michigan forbids those teens from being behind the wheel between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Previously, they could drive until midnight.
These restrictions are driven by statistics. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2008 63 percent of teenage passenger deaths happened when the car was driven by another teenager.
