A Wake County schools spokesperson said Timber Drive Elementary School was also put on alert.
Vandora Principal Troy Peuller told ABC11 he got the warning at 9:30 a.m. from Garner Police.
Just before 10 a.m., Peuller said he was told the bear was moving away and he reopened the school.
Police said the bear was first spotted around 8:30 a.m. in a wooded area near Hall Boulevard. They were advising citizens to leave the animal alone and let it pass through the area.
Garner Police Lieutenant Wayne Moore says officers are monitoring the bear, but there aren't any plans to subdue it.
As of noon, school officials said all area schools were back to normal operations.
