BG city schools puts building up for auction; tenants upset

BOWLING GREEN, OH The former South Main School classrooms are filled with everything from dance and art studios to a daycare center. The school district leases the property to the Art Council Lake Erie West - a non-profit geared towards the arts. Last weekend, the executive director of the organization got some unexpected news. Martin Nagy says, "Our lease was being cancelled and that had the building put up for auction on June 24."

Nagy says he knew that selling the building, which is now known as South Main Common Space, might be a possibility, but he didn't think it would be this sudden. Neither did his ten tenants. Nagy says, "It's frustrating to have to go through a process like this especially because its unexpected," says Nagy. "It's very difficult for some of those people to move on that short of notice."

Tabitha Wilkens, President of Jack and Jill Daycare, says, "We were just kind of blindsided by this and that it just came on all of a sudden, at once." Wilkens says trying to find a new location for a daycare in less than 30 days is nearly impossible. Wilkens says, "You have to find a new building. You have to go through licensing laws. You have city laws building codes."

Twenty-five children attend Jack and Jill Daycare and 12 people work there. Wilkens worries the tight timeframe will seriously impact her clients and staff. "I don't want to close my doors to these parents and lose these employees. I have great employees. I love the parents. Some of the kids have been with us since they were six weeks old and now they're toddlers."

For now, Wilkens plans to renovate her other location and hopefully find a place for the summer. And as for Nagy, he's talking with school leaders hoping he can buy the tenants some more time.

Nagy has sent a letter to the district superintendent asking for up to 120 days to leave the building. 13abc tried to reach the school district for comment but we haven't heard back. As it stands, South Main Common Space will be auctioned off June 24.
