Stolen-car crash kills pregnant teen, father

POMONA, Calif.

The crash occurred at about 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Holt and Garey avenues. Officials said the preliminary investigation showed the driver of a stolen 2008 Infiniti was speeding at about 60 mph eastbound on Holt Avenue. The driver of a 1995 Nissan Maxima was trying to make a left turn into a Jack in the Box when it was broadsided.

The Nissan split in half upon impact and exploded into flames. Parts of the vehicle's tires were seen melted onto the sidewalk.

Miguel Herrera, 22, and his pregnant girlfriend Desiree Grajeda, 17, were instantly killed in the Nissan.

"The flames were just sky-high. They were tremendous, tremendous flames," said witness Peter Romanowski. "I've never seen an accident like that ever in my life."

The Infiniti was reported stolen Sunday night. The driver, 26-year-old Lorraine Martinez of Pomona, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. There is evidence another person may have been in the vehicle during the collision who then fled the scene.

Martinez did not have a driver's license, according to authorities. She was arrested after being questioned by police.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information related to the incident was asked to call the Pomona Police Department at (909) 620-2081.
