Fullerton councilwoman calls for police chief's resignation

FULLERTON, Calif.

Councilwoman Sharon Quirk-Silva contends that Fullerton Police Chief Michael Sellers should have been more "hands-on" once the incident became public.

The incident and pictures of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas before he was taken off life support have generated intense anger in the community.

Thomas, who had mental health issues, got into the fight when officers arrested him July 5 on suspicion of possessing stolen goods.

A spokesman for Sellers said he has no intention of resigning.

Fullerton Mayor Richard Jones said he understands people's frustration but urged them not to rush to judgment.

The officers involved have been put on paid leave. Along with the Orange County district attorney, the FBI is also investigating.

The district attorney's office is waiting for the results of toxicology tests to determine if any criminal charges will be filed against the officers.
