Oxnard murder trial goes to jury

CHATSWORTH, LOS ANGELES

Closing arguments were completed Thursday.

McInerney is charged with first-degree murder with a hate-crime enhancement. Prosecutors allege McInerney shot King because King was gay, and allege McInerney is a budding white supremacist.

The defense contends that King, 15, had made advances at McInerney, and that McInerney had suffered abuse as a child and was made uncomfortable by King's advances.

King was shot in the head in a classroom at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard.

McInerney, now 17, was 14 at the time of the shooting. He is being tried as an adult.
