Amid controversy, Fullerton police chief extends leave

FULLERTON, Calif.

Sellers abruptly took leave in August while facing mounting pressure to answer questions about the controversial death of Kelly Thomas, a schizophrenic homeless man who died after being beaten by officers while being arrested.

Sellers's leave will last at least another 30 days.

The six Fullerton police officers involved with the beating of Thomas are on administrative leave.

The city has hired an independent investigator to examine the case.
