Security guard arrested in El Segundo rape

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.

Police believe there may be more victims.

Investigators say 30-year-old Charles Lee Kelly was wearing his security guard uniform Monday when he offered a woman a ride near Imperial Highway and Prairie Avenue in Inglewood sometime after 8 p.m.

A short time later, police said he pulled a knife and sexually assaulted her in a parking lot in the 2500 block of E. El Segundo Boulevard in El Segundo. The victim managed to escape from the car and flee the area.

Police said they were able to locate the suspect's white 2004 Mitsubishi Galant and arrest him by tracking the victim's cellphone that she dropped in the back seat.

Kelly was arrested in Inglewood for rape, robbery, false imprisonment and the use of a dangerous weapon in a felony.

Authorities said Kelly is in fact a security guard, but did not immediately disclose where he worked.

Some El Segundo residents said they are alarmed the alleged sexual assault happened in an otherwise quiet and usually safe community.

"I tell my kids and wife to be aware of their surroundings, be focused on what they're doing, because there's a lot of crime not only here but everywhere," said Richard Floresca of El Segundo.

El Segundo police are urging other possible victims to contact authorities at (310) 524-2216.
