Newport to decide on cutting eucalyptus trees

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

City staff call 18 blue gum eucalyptus trees on the 2200 block of Holiday Rd. a threat to public safety and have recommended they be cut down.

But the parks commission voted to keep the trees.

The city has cut down more than 140 trees since September, when a eucalyptus tree fell at Irvine Ave. and 17th St., killing a young woman in her car.

Last year, a motorist was injured by a falling tree on Irvine Ave.
