Iran says it shot down unmanned US spy plane

TEHRAN, Iran

Iran's armed forces claim that the plane violated the country's airspace.

However U.S. officials in Afghanistan believe the aircraft isn't the stealth drone but an unmanned reconnaissance plane that veered off course while in western Afghanistan and crashed last week.

And although the drone hasn't been recovered, military officials say there isn't any indication that it was shot down.

The RQ-170 Sentinel was the same aircraft used to monitor /*Osama bin Laden*/'s compound in Pakistan. Specifics of the plane have been kept confidential.

Iran has claimed in the past to shooting down unmanned U.S. spy planes that they say were used to monitor its nuclear and military facilities.
