Family of Va. Tech shooter offers condolences

December 12, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
The family of the man accused of gunning down a Virginia Tech campus police officer offered condolences and prayers to the officer's family on Monday.

In an unsigned statement faxed to The Associated Press, the family of 22-year-old Ross Truett Ashley also requested that their privacy be respected.

"The Ashley family would like to offer their condolences to the family of Officer Crouse," the statement said. "Officer Crouse and his family are in their prayers."

Authorities said Officer Deriek Crouse made a traffic stop last Thursday and was sitting in his cruiser when Ashley walked up and shot him. He was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A funeral was held at Cassell Coliseum on campus on Monday for Crouse.

Virginia State Police investigators are attempting to determine a motive for what appears to be an unprovoked attack.
