The incident happened Saturday afternoon at Long Canyon Creek Park in Temecula.
The boy's friend yelled for help. Two adults tried to dig the boy out while they called 911.
When authorities arrived, they found the child almost completely buried under rocks.
He was taken to Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta for treatment, and then flown to a children's hospital in San Diego.
