Arctic falcon spotted near Lake Perris

February 9, 2012 12:00:00 AM PST
An arctic bird that has never been seen in Southern California has taken up residence near Lake Perris.

Throngs of bird watchers have descended on the San Jacinto Wildlife Area to see the gyrfalcon, the world's largest falcon.

Normally, it's only found in places like Alaska or Iceland. No one really knows what it's doing in Southern California.

Mark Chappell, a University of California, Riverside biologist who snapped photos of the birds, said he couldn't believe his eyes when he spotted the incredible creature.
