The new-car smell that so many people love may actually come from toxic chemicals.

New research shows some of those chemicals are associated with cancer, birth defects and other health issues.

The 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and 2011 Chrysler 200 both had scores in the "high" range for toxic chemicals, according to a study conducted by the nonprofit Ecology Center.

The car with the healthiest interior was the 2012 Honda Civic.
