Holiday travel in Southland up from last year

July 4, 2012 12:00:00 AM PDT
About three million Southern Californians are expected to travel this year for the 4th of July, a 5-percent increase from last year.

In total, about 42 million Americans are getting away this year, which is the most in years. The top destination for Southlanders this holiday is San Diego. Las Vegas and San Francisco came in second and third, respectively.

Because the holiday falls on a Wednesday this year, many people are making a longer vacation of it, meaning they'll be traveling by air as well. If you're traveling by road, there's good news at the gas pump.

Regular gas is at $3.73 per gallon in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area , $3.68 in Orange County, $3.70 in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and $3.73 in Ventura County. Just a week ago, prices were hovering near the $4-mark.
