Triple-digit heat wave bakes Southland

Woodland Hills hit 108 on Monday, tying the city's record high set in 1997. The Los Angeles County Health Department has issued excessive heat warnings for the Antelope, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys. Those warnings will last through Friday. Riverside County has a heat warning for the next seven days.

The jump in daytime temperatures is due to strong high pressure over the Southwest combined with weak onshore flow.

It is also expected to get humid as the week goes on, so it is important to stay cool and drink plenty of water, as fatalities occur from heat-related illness every year. Cooling centers have been set up throughout Southern California, and Southern California Edison also has sites established throughout the state.

In the event you can't avoid being in the sun, health officials say remember to wear sun block, get plenty of shade and keep hydrated. Officials also advise keeping an eye on elderly neighbors and children.
