South LA teen shooting $50K reward in the works

SOUTH LOS ANGELES

Caruthers was gunned down Tuesday afternoon while sitting on a park bench at the Jackie Tatum / Harvard Recreation Center in South Los Angeles. Caruthers, a special-needs student, was sitting with his headphones on when a dark-colored sedan pulled up. One suspect got out and shot Caruthers, hitting him multiple times. He died at the scene.

The request for the reward is coming from L.A. City Councilman Bernard Parks, who also says security cameras should have been installed in the park.

Parks says cameras could have led authorities quickly to Caruthers' killer, but paperwork for the cameras has been held up since February.

Caruthers, who attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College, was well-known in the neighborhood and volunteered at the park and the city's Summer Night Lights program.

Anyone with information related to the case should contact the LAPD at (877) 527-3247.
