Inglewood bicyclist-deputy crash to be focus of internal review

INGLEWOOD, Calif.

Alfonso Cerda Sr. was riding his bicycle on Monday when deputies, believing he had a gun, began chasing him.

After a short pursuit, the squad car and Cerda both slammed into an iron fence. Cerda died from his injuries at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Authorities say Cerda, 45, was not armed as deputies first believed.

Cerda's family members spoke out after the incident, questioning the sheriff's department's policy surrounding bicycle chases and stops.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Inglewood Police Department at (310) 412-8771.
