For the first time, teachers have voted to express a lack of confidence in the leadership of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy.

According to the Los Angeles Times, United Teachers Los Angeles said more than 90 percent of its union members who voted in a weeklong referendum expressed disapproval with Deasy. More than half of the teachers voted.

The vote is believed to be linked to some of Deasy's recent proposals, including a student evaluation system, limits on teacher seniority and a speed-up in dismissals of teachers accused of misconduct.

Before the outcome was announced, Deasy had called the vote "nonsense."
