Missing hiker rescued in Santa Clarita canyon

LOS ANGELES

Authorities say Brian Napoli went hiking with a friend in Towsley Canyon on Monday afternoon, but somehow, the two got separated. He called friends at 4:51 p.m. to say he was lost in the canyon, and then his phone battery went dead.

The search began at about 5:30 p.m. After searching all night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department suspended the search at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday. The search resumed at daylight.

Napoli was located at the bottom of a canyon at about 9:45 a.m. He told rescuers that he slipped and fell while hiking, hitting his head. He said he was knocked out for some time, but did not know how long.

"When it was getting dark, there was a pack of coyotes, so I ran up that ridge right there, and then I saw the helicopter at night, and I said, 'I'm not going to move,'" he said.

Napoli said he covered himself with chaparral to keep warm.

Meanwhile, Napoli's brother and sister, who were helping in the search, also got stuck in the canyon Tuesday morning. Crews found them and walked them out.
