INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Hundreds of baby piglets were rescued in a nearly six-hour-long operation last night after a truck hauling the animals overturned in Indianapolis.

The Wayne Township Fire Department were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. last night and began working on the overturned truck that had 2,058 piglets on board.

Nearly three hours later, fire crews were still working to rescue the baby pigs from the truck. About 700 pigs suffocated and died on scene because they were packed in the truck on top of each other, ABC affiliate WRTV reports. It is not yet known how many pigs were injured but survived.

Around 10 p.m., firefighters began transferring the pigs from the crash scene to the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The pigs will remain there until the company who ordered all the pigs can come pick them up.

The driver was not hurt. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
