OMAHA, Nebr. -- An infant girl has died after being thrown from an apartment window in Nebraska, authorities said.
Omaha police said a pregnant 16-year-old went into labor and subsequently threw the child out of a second-story window after she was delivered on Friday.
When paramedics arrived, police said, the baby's grandmother was holding and administering CPR to the infant in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
The child was transported to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving there. The 16-year-old was also transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
Police said the teen's mother called 911 to report her daughter.
"The child was transported to Creighton University Medical Center, the child has died," Lt. Mark Desler, of the Omaha Police Department, said.
Family members of the teen were in disbelief.
"It's caught me by surprise. I just can't believe it. Stunned," said the teen's grandfather, John Barcelona.
Barcelona said he saw his granddaughter just days ago and had no idea she was even pregnant.
"She looked like she was well underweight more than anything else, I would've never dreamed that she was pregnant," Barcelona said. "In my head, I just can't believe it, I can't believe it."
Neighbors were trying to wrap their heads around the horrific scene.
"It makes me feel very disturbed," neighbor Mark Nelson said. "Just looked like a normal family, normal neighbors, say hi, keep to their self."
Police said charges were pending the results of an autopsy and the remainder of the investigation.
KETV reported that the teen was in the hospital in fair but stable condition.
A motive remained unknown. It was also unclear whether or not other family members knew the teen was pregnant.
