Bell grandmother found dead, deputies search for granddaughter

BELL, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman was found dead in a Bell home and authorities said her granddaughter was on the run with her four children.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the body of 64-year old Paula Montoya was found on July 21 at her home on the 6600 block of Pine Avenue after a family member called for a welfare check.

The last time Paula Montoya was seen alive, she had received a visit from her granddaughter, 24-year-old Sarah Montoya, and her four children on July 18, according to deputies.

"We have information that Sarah crossed the border into Mexico. We have not been able to corroborate that at this point in time, but we are trying to garner the public's assistance in locating her so that we can ensure her safety," Lt. Mike Rosson with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities stated an autopsy report has not been released and Paula Montoya's death could not be ruled a homicide at this time.

In the meantime, investigators continued to search for clues about the location of Sarah Montoya, and her mother pleaded for her to turn herself in.

"I just want you to know that your family is behind you 100 percent. You need to do the right thing and just come home, so we know that you and the babies are safe," Julia Isham, Sarah Montoya's mother said.

Authorities said Sarah Montoya's vehicle was found near the border of the U.S. and Mexico. Her children range in age from 1 to 9 years old, according to deputies.
