Carson woman helps catch her burglars with surveillance camera

CARSON, Calif. (KABC) -- Two suspects caught on video burglarizing a home in Carson were arrested Thursday, and the victim herself helped catch the alleged culprits.

Megan, who did not want to reveal her last name, did not have one but two shattered patio doors, now boarded up, and the damage was done by burglars on Monday and again on Thursday.

The victim had two cameras outside, but they were not yet hooked up. After Monday's break-in, she placed two more cameras inside on her staircase and made sure the system was working so she could monitor the cameras using her cell phone.

"I was at work just kind of checking on it on my phone and flipped through and saw a flash go by, and I'm like, 'Oh my God,' so I flipped to the next one, and I saw somebody running up my stairs," she said.

Megan immediately called the sheriff's department after seeing the crime happen with her own eyes.

Squad cars were close by, and a sheriff's helicopter in the area saw the suspects climb over her back wall and take off running.

The suspects were taken into custody around 10:45 a.m. in the 16400 block of S. Haskins Lane, attempting to escape the scene of the crime, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. One was arrested near the home, while the other was found a short time later.

"They brought in the K-9 units, and they found them, like, three doors down, I think, hiding in a shed," Megan said.

Megan doesn't know if her cameras recorded video of the break-in. The burglars cut the wires to the cameras and tried to disable the whole system, but not before she caught them in the act.
