GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities investigated a shooting in Garden Grove Friday afternoon that may have involved two 16-year-old boys.
Garden Grove police received calls around 2:18 p.m. regarding shots fired outside of an apartment complex in the 12600 block of Keel Street. When officers arrived to the scene, two people suffering gunshot wounds were found.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and the other victim was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. He sustained a gunshot to the upper arm and is expected to survive, authorities said.
Both victims are 16 years old, a friend told Eyewitness News, and the deceased person was a sophomore at a local high school.
"He was a good kid. I don't know why this had to happen. He's no gang member. He's not from nothing, so for those that portray him as a gang member - they're wrong," Saul Sorino said.
But authorities said the shooting has been determined to be gang related.
It is unclear what sparked the shooting. The investigation is ongoing and the names of the victims will not be released until next of kin is notified.
