DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (KABC) -- Sheriff's deputies in Diamond Bar shot and wounded a man allegedly armed with an assault rifle and who is believed to have stabbed his mother Monday morning.

The deputy-involved shooting was reported near Crooked Creek Drive and Diamond Bar Boulevard around 11:45 a.m.

Deputies responded to reports by neighbors of a woman who was apparently stabbed by her son. The woman collapsed in the middle of the street as the suspect took off on foot armed with a gun.

The suspect was shot by deputies as they arrived to the scene, authorities said. An apparent assault rifle was recovered from the location of the shooting.

Jeanette Canton said her neighbor alerted her about hearing gunshots in the area.

"He said that he didn't want to live anymore, that he wanted to kill everybody and he kinda just went off his rocker, I guess," Canton said about the suspect.

She said the suspect seemed like a "normal kid" who she would see outside driving or washing the car.

It's unclear if the suspect fired back at deputies.

The suspect and the woman believed to be his mother were taken to local hospitals. Their conditions are unknown. No deputies were injured.

AIR7 HD was over the area, where investigators were seen surrounding a white vehicle looking for evidence.

"It's just sad," Canton said. "You think we live in a safe area, in a safe environment and this happens."
