PLAYA DEL REY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reopened Dockweiler State Beach Saturday afternoon after medical waste washed ashore from a sewer pipe days before.
The investigation was ongoing to determine what caused the debris to appear in the water as cleanup continued.
The closure from Ballona Creek to Grand Avenue was announced at around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday following a report of debris along the shoreline and in the water.
Water at the beach showed excessive levels of bacteria, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials said.
Crews picked up 200 pounds of unsanitary objects, including condoms, tampon applicators and hypodermic needles.
Public Health officials said they will continue to work with other departments to monitor the beaches and ensure they are safe for the public.
