DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect behind the wheel of a reportedly stolen car tried to back up the vehicle and run over a California Highway Patrol officer in Downey, prompting that officer to open fire.

It all began around 8 a.m. on the 605 Freeway just north of Alondra Boulevard during a traffic stop.

"The driver was unable to produce a driver license or an identification card, but identified himself with a fictitious name and date of birth," police said in a press release.

While the officer was doing a records check on the driver and the vehicle, the driver sped off. During the short chase, the CHP officer, who was on a motorcycle, heard from dispatch that the car he tried pull over was stolen.

When the car arrived at a stop sign at Cecilia Street, the driver hit the brakes suddenly, sending smoke up from the tires. The driver then put the vehicle in reverse as the officer was approaching the car, police said.

"The officer sees that, recognizes they're trying to run him over, dumps the bike, draws his weapon and shoots at the vehicle," said CHP Officer Al Perez.

No one was hit by gunfire.

After the officer opened fire, the driver and a passenger bailed on foot. They were both taken into custody near Florence Avenue and Little Lake Road around 8:20 a.m.

The two face charges that could include assault on a peace officer for using that car as a weapon to try and run down that officer.
