MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- Concerns about toxins at Malibu High School brought some famous faces to a packed City Council meeting Monday night.
Students, teachers and concerned parents, including model Cindy Crawford, made their case for more testing and removal of toxins at the school. They supported a resolution proposed by Mayor Skylar Peak to pressure the school board to take action.
Among the speakers was 15-year-old Christian Pierce, who survived a brain tumor as a child. He's being homeschooled this year after cancer-causing PCBs were detected at Malibu High last year.
"I feel like I've been betrayed by my own school. It's corrupt. They're putting money over safety," said Pierce.
Pierce is one of many kids being homeschooled this year. Crawford is homeschooling her two children instead of sending them back to Malibu High.
"The kids want to be in school with their friends. Why so many of us move to Malibu is to be part of this community and have the kids go to public school. So to be put in this dilemma as a parent, whatever your decision is, it's a terrible position to be in," said Crawford.
The council also heard from three environmental scientists about the need for action. When it came time for a vote, the resolution to test PCB sources in all Malibu schools was unanimous.
"This is the first step in the right direction. What I hope is that it doesn't take another year before we actually see real progress," said parent Beth Lucas.
The council plans to send copies of the resolution to county, state and federal education officials.
