2017 Ford Escape debuts new technology

Ford's compact SUV, the Ford Escape, received a makeover for 2017, catering to the growing popularity of smaller SUVs.

"One-third of all vehicles sold in the U.S. is an SUV," said Ford representative Kate Pearce. "And small SUVs, the segment that Escape plays in, is actually representing 17 percent of the industry."

The styling of the new Escape was lightly updated, but the technology was given a big upgrade.

Ford introduced Sync 3 in the new compact SUV, which included new safety systems to keep vehicles in the lane or out of collisions. It also used a simple touch-screen interface and better connectivity, including app-based convenience that people can use to display content on the dash screen from their phones.

In addition to Sync 3, Ford also rolled out an app that allows users to start their vehicle, schedule dealer services and more. According to Ford, the app is hack-proof.

With competition coming on strong from many brands, staying fresh was important to Ford.

Kia's newest Sportage SUV had big changes for 2016 that benefited in both styling and content.

The Honda CR-V, which has topped the highest-selling small-SUV charts for some time, sells as fast as Honda's factory in Ohio can crank them out, to the tune of well over 300,000 a year.

The Escape is not too far behind, and with technology updates for 2017, it's moving a bit ahead for buyers who want the latest tech.
