Los Angeles council members hope to use GPS street sweeper data for better parking info

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Finding parking in Los Angeles is never easy, but on street sweeping days it becomes even more of a pain as entire blocks are off limits for hours.

Street sweepers went high-tech in 2015 with GPS sensors. They were installed to determine the most efficient sweeping routes. But now, officials hope to use the data to ease parking.

They want people to be able to park on a street after a sweeper has passed. The City Council authorized a pilot program to figure out how to do that.

The idea is to make the GPS street sweeper data available to the public through a website or phone application.

Council members hope it will free up parking spaces earlier and reduce the number of parking tickets.
