Weight-loss program focuses on kids' needs
The EMPOWER, or Energy Management for Personalized Weight Reduction Program, at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles helps kids lose weight by focusing on a child's individualized needs.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Tackling weight loss isn't easy at any age, but one local hospital is offering a program with a focus on a child's individualized needs.

Patients in the EMPOWER, or Energy Management for Personalized Weight Reduction Program, at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles come in once a week for about six months.

Experts from several specialties, including physical therapy, psychology, endocrinology and nutrition all become part of the child's weight loss team.

"In this clinic, we have a personalized approach to every family, because every kid is different," said Steven Mittelman, a doctor at Children's Hospital.

Studies show a multidisciplinary approach to weight loss is more effective than just a diet plan, because changing your lifestyle is more than just calories in and calories out.

"We let the patient kind of decide the treatment plan. We work with them to figure out what's best for them and what they need," Mittelman said.

Sometimes that means working on the emotional component of eating and sometimes it's parental involvement.

The program is covered by insurance, although many companies don't always reimburse for obesity-related services. Any child who is overweight or obese can qualify for the program.

Children's Hospital just received a grant from the UniHealth Foundation to help expand and continue this clinic for the next three years.
