Obama signs bill to help veteran services, revamp West LA vet golf course

WEST LOS ANGELES, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- President Barack Obama signed a bill on Thursday to allow the repairs of the Heroes Golf Course on the West Los Angeles VA campus following an investigation by ABC7.

For years, a $3 million donation to fix the broken clubhouse was stuck in red tape. The bathrooms were rat infested and not compliant for handicapped veterans.

Veterans needed legislation to pass to allow them to negotiate a new lease, but it had been stuck in Congress for the last year.

Since ABC7's investigation began, the legislation passed both houses of Congress unanimously and was signed into law by Obama.

Congressman Ted Lieu helped guide the legislation through Congress.

"This is a significant first step and now we must complete the mission by revitalizing the West Los Angeles VA to make it a truly Veteran-centric campus," Lieu said in a written statement.

Lieu said the bill would also provide for the building of 1,200 homes for homeless vets and many other services.
