HUNTINGTON, BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- It's time to dust off the wooden surfboards. The city of Huntington Beach takes a trip back in time this weekend, celebrating a century of surfing.[br /][br /]It's hard to imagine Huntington Beach with no surfers and no crowds to watch them, but 100 years ago that was the scene.[br /][br /]On June 20, 1914, Huntington was the first concrete pier opened in the U.S. To celebrate, legendary surfer George Freeth was invited to give a demonstration. Few had seen anything like it.[br /][br /]"That was the first day anyone stood up on a board. He's the guy. He was the first guy to stand up in Huntington Beach," said legendary surfer Peter "PT" Townend.[br /][br /]The International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach has a replica of the wooden board Freeth rode.[br /][br /]"They weigh 90 pounds, and once they get going in one direction, it's a bit hard to change direction," said Townend.[br /][br /]Saturday it will be among dozens of wood boards to hit the water again, part of the city's "100 Years of Surfing" celebration.[br /][br /]"You can't surf tomorrow at the pier unless you have a wood board, and you have to register, and there's no full wetsuits allowed. You have to wear trunks," said Townend.[br /][br /]The celebration recreates the past while at the same time recognizing how far surfing has come, from the city's first surf shop in 1956 to the first surfing championship in 1959.[br /][br /]Huntington Beach now hosts the U.S Open of Surfing, the world's largest surf competition.[br /][br /]"It attracts surfers worldwide and attracts some of the best surf contests around because it's a very reliable surf break," said Huntington Beach Mayor Matthew Harper.[br /][br /]As surfers take to their wood boards Saturday, organizers say it won't be a competition as much as a celebration.[br /][br /]"They have four hours to get the ride of the day," said Townend.[br /][br /]The wood-board surfers will be surfing the south side of the pier between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.[br /][br /]On Sunday, there will be a special ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the pier. That begins at 11 a.m.[br /][br /]For more information: " TARGET="new"]http://www.surfcityusa.com/100-years-of-surfing-hb/[br /][br /]
