HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Saturday was tryout day for lifeguard hopefuls in Huntington Beach.
The city is looking to hire 20 strong men and women -- but they will have to prove themselves first.
Tryouts began at 8 a.m. The performance test included three physical events: a 1,000-yard ocean swim, 500-yard ocean swim and 1,500-yard run-swim-run.
All exams took place around and through the Huntington Beach Pier. Applicants were as young as 17 years old.
After the Saturday tryouts, the top candidates will then move on to the interview part of the process on Sunday.
