LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A deputy is recovering Monday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Authorities say a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was conducting a traffic stop in the area of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and San Jose Street at about 8:15 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle.

It's unclear what direction the vehicle was coming from, but the driver was traveling about 40 miles per hour at the time.

The deputy's injuries are not believed to be life threatening. He was rushed to an area hospital with trauma to the right side of his body.

The suspect's vehicle may have been a white four-door Toyota Camry or Chevy Malibu. Investigators say the vehicle's right side mirror was broken off and left at the scene.
