Lincoln Heights scrap yard fire causes explosions

LINCOLN HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A scrap yard fire was burning at 1809 Hancock Hancock Street in Lincoln Heights at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. The fire is believed to have burned at the ASAP Auto Wrecking business.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the fire. At least 77 firefighters were assigned to the blaze.

The department was concerned about 55-gallon drums exploding. The department described possible "exotic" metals that may be fire/water reactive at the scene. There were reports of explosions at the scene.

The fire was extinguished by 9:03 p.m., according to the department.

No injuries were reported. There was no structural damage at the location, the department said. The bulk of the flames were in an auto-dismantling yard. Nearby storage of 55-gallon plastic barrels containing pickles and brine caught fire and added to the smoke.

No evacuations were ordered.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
