After about an hour, the suspect drove under a freeway underpass and was no longer being followed by law enforcement.
It's unclear if the suspect took off on foot and left the vehicle behind. At last check, the suspect remains at large.
According to the Costa Mesa Police Department, the chase started around 9:41 p.m. on the NB 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa after officers received reports about a stolen vehicle.
At one point, the vehicle yielded and soon after, a man was taken into custody during a traffic stop.
The vehicle suddenly took off again, prompting the pursuit, police said. According to reports, a female passenger jumped behind the wheel and kept driving.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol and other agencies are in pursuit of a suspect in a stolen car.
The chase of the white SUV started in Costa Mesa Wednesday morning and made its way north into the South Los Angeles area.
The suspect reached high speeds on multiple freeways before entering the city of Inglewood.
Shortly before 11 a.m., authorities lost sight of the vehicle as it approached the 405 Freeway from the westbound 105 Freeway.
Flight restrictions above nearby Los Angeles International Airport hampered efforts by a sheriff's helicopter and media choppers from searching for the fleeing vehicle.
Details of the theft of the SUV in Orange County were not immediately available.
