Hollywood pot dispensary starts sale of recreational marijuana today

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A Hollywood pot dispensary is now selling recreational marijuana shoppers for the first time since receiving its license.

MMD Cannabis Dispensary is the first Hollywood location to get its license from the city of Los Angeles and the state of California for adult use sales of marijuana.

"It's significant for us because we'll be able to serve the tourist community and continue to serve our patients that we have done in the past," said Steve Ashbel, director of MMD.

The dispensary is located at 1515 N. Cahuenga Boulevard. The shop has been selling medical marijuana for more than a decade, and representatives say they're excited to expand their clientele in a responsible way.

"We just want everyone to be safe, to not consume in public and just let us educate and provide this legal access to everyone," Ashbel said.

Now that marijuana has been legalized in California for recreational use, what does it mean for those who were convicted on pot charges?

In a single day, anyone over the age of 21 can now buy up to one ounce of dried flower and up to 8 grams of concentrated cannabis. None of it can be consumed in public.

There are several other licensed dispensaries in the L.A.-area, but this is the first to open its doors in Hollywood. It's all thanks to Proposition 64, which legalized recreational use of marijuana in California.
