Misty Copeland to have San Pedro intersection named after her

SAN PEDRO, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles City Council has voted to honor Misty Copeland by naming a San Pedro intersection after her.

Copeland, 33, is the first African-American ballerina to be promoted to principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre.

Copeland took her first ballet lessons at the San Pedro Boys & Girls Club when she was 13.

Four years later, she was hired by the American Ballet Theatre.

Her name will be fixed to the 13th Street and Pacific Avenue intersection in San Pedro.

On Monday, Copeland was honored at Glamour magazine's annual Women of the Year awards along with Caitlyn Jenner, Reese Witherspoon, Victoria Beckham, the U.S. women's soccer team, and a group of women from Charleston, South Carolina.

Copeland is expected to return to San Pedro on Dec. 21 to teach a class at the San Pedro Ballet School as a fundraising benefit for her former academy.

The ceremonial presentation of renaming the intersection is expected to take place before she teaches the class on Dec. 21.
