MONTEBELLO, Calif. (KABC) -- A dog who was rescued from a dumpster outside a restaurant in Montebello Wednesday night had to be put to sleep after animal control officials realized the animal had been bitten by a coyote or a dog.

Montebello police officers responded to a report of an abandoned dog near the rear of Alondra Hot Wings in the 600 block of W. Whittier Boulevard.

Upon their arrival, they found a small white dog in a large trash dumpster.

The dog, which initially appeared to be unharmed and in good condition, was turned over to the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority to be cared for.

"After the dog was cleaned up, an untreatable puncture wound was located on his neck, possibly from a coyote or a dog. Due to this wound, the dog had to be put down," the Montebello Police Department said in a statement released Thursday morning.

A number of animals are available for adoption on the SEAACA's website. For more information, visit www.seaaca.org/adoptions.
