LAPD: Don't shoot guns into the air to celebrate New Year

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police are reminding Angelenos to not fire guns into the air to ring in the New Year.

The Los Angeles Police Department said every year, a number of Los Angeles residents discharge firearms into the air to celebrate the New Year.

Authorities emphasized that this is illegal and such actions will not be tolerated.

Anyone who shoots a gun into the air can be arrested for a felony.

In addition, LAPD warned people that setting off fireworks is also illegal in the city of Los Angeles.

People caught lighting fireworks can be arrested for a misdemeanor.

Police said if you want to see fireworks, head to one of the professional displays that are planned.
