2 killed in crash caused by wrong-way driver on 110 Freeway

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A fatal crash caused by a wrong-way driver shut down several southbound lanes of the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 1:19 a.m. near the 10 Freeway interchange. Deputies say they noticed a white 2003 Acura TL weaving through traffic and tried to pull it over. The driver, only identified as a 22-year-old man, stopped on the right shoulder, but suddenly made a U-turn and tried to hit the deputies' car. They were able to avoid him.

The driver continued traveling northbound on the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a black 1997 Ford Ranger at 9th Street, killing himself and the 58-year-old male driver of the truck.

Five of the six southbound lanes were temporarily closed during the investigation.
