Senate bill proposes to increase legal smoking age to 21

The Victorville City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to ban smoking and vaping at all public parks, sports fields, recreation areas and area parking lots.

State Senator Ed Hernandez (D-Azusa) introduced a bill Thursday that could increase the legal smoking age from 18 to 21.

Senate Bill 151 is likely to face opposition from tobacco companies who have become major players in Sacramento.

Hernandez hopes it will be harder for teens to get their hands on cigarettes if the bill is signed into law.
