LIMA, Peru (KABC) -- A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit 26 miles east-northeast of Tambo, Peru, on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.
There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The National Weather Service said a tsunami was not expected.
The earthquake was first reported as a magnitude 7.0, but was later downgraded. It had a depth of 36.6 miles, the USGS said.
The area where the temblor hit is a sparsely populated area of central Peru, located about 290 miles from the capital of Lima.
