Caltrans worker's death a stark reminder of highway safety

SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The children of a Caltrans worker killed on the 14 Freeway on Thursday are hoping that their family's tragedy can serve as a stark reminder to drivers to be careful on the roads, especially when driving in construction zones.

"My father was supposed to have birthday dinner with my mom last night, but he did not make it home because somebody was reckless," said Daniela Lopez.

Her father, Jorge Lopez, 57, was killed when a big rig veered onto the shoulder on the 14 Freeway in Acton where highway crews were working.

His children say their father knew his job was dangerous but he worked with pride and dignity knowing he was helping to keep roads and highways as safe as possible for drivers.

Now, his son said, he hopes drivers will remember to be safe when they are behind the wheel.

"It only takes a second," said Alberto Lopez. "It takes a second to save a life and it takes a second to take one away. If you're driving, put the phone down. If you're driving, you should be paying attention to the road. And you can stop tragedies like this from happening."
