Chunk of ice falls from sky, mysteriously hits Colton townhome

COLTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Colton resident Megan Clement says a large chunk of ice mysteriously fell out of the clear blue sky and slammed into her townhome shortly before 10 a.m. Monday morning.

"I heard like a loud bang hitting [what] sounded like the wall or the outside of the house, and I thought maybe one of the trees fell," she said.

Once outside, Clement didn't find a fallen tree. She found chunks of ice, which she saved, and contacted Eyewitness News using #abc7eyewitness.

"They were all over the walkway and the bushes, on the roof," Clement said, adding that her roof wasn't damaged because the ice hit her trees first.

Hail is not unheard of, but Monday was a clear, warm and sunny spring day. Clement, who graduated with a degree in environmental studies, has a theory.

"I started researching stuff and I found out it could be a megacryometeor, which is an ice chunk falling from the sky," Clement said.

A megacryometeor is very rare because they can form under clear skies, but there's another possible explanation.

"Maybe it was like a plane dropping some ice chunks or something," Clement said.

The townhomes are under the flight path of several major airports, including Los Angeles International Airport. A climate anomaly or a piece of airplane ice, either way, something fell out of the sky and hit Clement's home.
