GRIFFITH PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An Encino man was charged Wednesday with attempted murder in the severe beating of a hiker in Griffith Park on Monday.

Tyrone Isumu, 54, is accused of striking a male victim with a rock multiple times near Fern Dell and Red Oak drives just north of the Western Avenue entrance to Griffith Park on Monday.

Isumu allegedly grabbed a large steel trash can and hit the victim with it before fleeing the scene. He was later captured by police.

The victim was airlifted from the scene and hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in critical condition. The L.A. County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday the victim is comatose and has paralysis.

Isumu has been charged with one count of attempted murder with a great bodily injury allegation.

Isumu was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. Prosecutors are recommending $530,000 bail for Isumu. If convicted, he faces a possible maximum term of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
